Consent

An acronym for easily defining and remembering if consent is valid: FRIES stands for:

  • Freely-given: Any form of coercion invalidates consent.
  • Reversible: Consent can be revoked at any time. (If you aren't allowed to change your mind, it isn't consent.)
  • Informed: If you do not understand what you are agreeing to, you cannot consent to it. (Contracts most often violate this.)
  • Enthusiastic: This primarily applies to consent with regards to intimacy, as far as I know. If you aren't into it, you aren't really there.
  • Specific: Agreeing to something without detail is not consent because it causes miscommunication.

Informed consent: A person must:

  1. Be capable of consent. (For example: A suicidal person cannot consent because they are in an altered mental state.)
  2. Know they are consenting.
  3. Know to what extent they are consenting.
  4. Be able to withdraw consent at any time.
