An acronym for easily defining and remembering if consent is valid: FRIES stands for:
- Freely-given: Any form of coercion invalidates consent.
- Reversible: Consent can be revoked at any time. (If you aren't allowed to change your mind, it isn't consent.)
- Informed: If you do not understand what you are agreeing to, you cannot consent to it. (Contracts most often violate this.)
- Enthusiastic: This primarily applies to consent with regards to intimacy, as far as I know. If you aren't into it, you aren't really there.
- Specific: Agreeing to something without detail is not consent because it causes miscommunication.
Informed consent: A person must:
- Be capable of consent. (For example: A suicidal person cannot consent because they are in an altered mental state.)
- Know they are consenting.
- Know to what extent they are consenting.
- Be able to withdraw consent at any time.
